After completing master of surgery in ophthalmology from Mumbai university, Dr. Pankaj Bendale completed long term Glaucoma fellowship under Dr. P. Sathyan at Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbtore.

Professional Experience

  • He worked as a Glaucoma Fellow for two years in Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu. Aravind Eye Hospital is a tertiary care referral center in INDIA, recognized by the National Board Of Examinations (NBE) in New Delhi and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London for Basic Specialist Training (BST). It is a World Health Organization (WHO) collaborating center for prevention of Blindness. His surgical exposures during this stint had strong emphasis on cataract surgeries like Small incision Cataract extraction and Phacoemulsification with IOL implantation in both Venturi and Peristaltic machines.
  • He was involved in teaching Small Incision Cataract Surgery and Phacoemulsification to residents and practicing ophthalmologists from various parts of INDIA.
  • Currently he is working as Chief of Glaucoma Services & Adult Cataract Consultant at National institute of Ophthalmology, Pune since January 2010. Till date he has done around 10,000 Cataract Surgeries.
  • Till today he has done around 3000 Trabeculectomy with or without Cataract Surgeries.

Surgical And Clinical Skills

  1. CATARACT MICROSURGERIES:
    • He has done 10,000 of Cataract Microsurgeries in last few years.
    • He is comfortable in doing Topical Clear Corneal Phacoemulsification with foldable intraocular lens implantation.
    • He is able to perform all the techniques of Phaco e.g. Divide and Conquer; Stop and Chop, Direct Chop, Horizontal and Vertical Chop.
    • He has special interest in doing Complicated Cataract Surgeries e.g. Traumatic Cataract, Subluxated Cataract, Cataract in Small Pupil with Posterior Synechiae, Cataract with Pseudoexfoliation, Hypermature Cataract and Intumuscent Cataract.
    • Successfully doing Subluxated Cataract Surgery with use of CTR (Capsular Tention Ring).
  2. GLAUCOMA SURGERY:
    • He did his Glaucoma fellowship under Dr. P SATHYAN (Ex Chief Glaucoma Services, Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore,Tamilnadu, INDIA).
    • During his fellowship he acquired good clinical knowledge and skill of Trabeculectomy & their preoperative & post operative management.
    • He has done many plain Trabeculectomy, Phaco-Trabeculectomy with Foldable IOL as well as SICS with Trabeculectomy with IOL with good level of excellence.
    • In almost all cases of glaucoma surgery, he is putting Releasable Sutures and using Mitomycin-C or Ologen implant. Till today he has done around 3000 Trabeculectomy with or without Cataract Surgeries.
    • He is regularly doing non penetrating Glaucoma Surgeries, Express Shunt,Aurolab Aqueous drainage implant and also Ahmed valve implantation for Refractory Glaucoma.
  3. PEDIATRIC GlAUCOMA MICOSURGERIES:
    • As we all know that Pediatric Glaucoma Surgery is different and difficult than adult surgery, he had wide experience of doing this cases during my fellowship.
    • He is comfortable in doing Goniotomy, Trabeculotomy & Trabeculotomy + Trabeculectomy in neonates as well as infants.
  4. LASER PROCEDURES:
    • He has done many Nd:Yag laser Capsulotomy, Argon Laser Suturolysis, Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty, Nd:Yag Laser Peripheral Iridotomy and Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty

Areas Of Interest

  • As mentioned above he is focused on Adult Cataract, Glaucoma Surgeries. He is very comfortable with Toric IOLs, Accomodative IOLs, Microphacoemulsification, Express Shunt for Glaucoma, Aravind Aqueous Drainage device which are recent surgeries.
    Currently there are 2 fellows with him to learn Glaucoma Diagnosis & Management at National Institute of Ophthalmology, Pune, INDIA.

Community Outreach Programmes And Other Eeye Care Awareness Activities

  • Community outreach programs are one of the major activities of Aravind Eye Care System in reaching out the community. Through free Eye Camps, Medical Teams from Hospital reach patients in rural area. The team works closely with local community leaders and service groups to organize the camps.
    Apart from cataract screening camps, eye screening in schools, refraction camps in industries have also been organized regularly. Being a Medical Officer he personally took interest and actively involved in various steps of conducting camps as well as maintaining good relations with sponsors. During a stay of 2 years in Aravind Eye Hospital he has attended more than 150 Cataract Screening Camps
